afterwards. It's mythology. You're not supposed to ask that kind of question.
On the other hand, beer has a flavour all its own; it's something to do with the water. Some people say it's like consommé, but they are wrong. Consommé is cooler.
Ridcully smacked his lips happily.
'Ah, we certainly know what goes into good beer in AnkhMorpork,' he said.
The wizards nodded. They certainly did. That's why they were drinking gin and tonic.
Ridcully looked around. Normally at this time of night there was a fight going on somewhereRidcully believed that everything had come into being by chance or, in the particular case of the Dean, out of spite.Senior wizards didn't usually drink in the Mended Drum except when they were off duty. They were aware that they were here tonight in some sort of ill‑defined official capacity, and were seated rather primly in front of their drinks. There was a ring of empty seats around them, but it was not very big because the Drum was unusually crowded.'Lot of ambience in here,' said Ridcully, looking around. 'Ah, I see they do Real Ale again. I'll have a pint of Turbot's Really Odd, please.'The wizards watched him as he drained the mug. Ankh‑Morpork

It was music that went down to the feet by way of the pelvis without paying a call on Mr Brain.
The troll picked up his hammers, looked blankly at his stones, and then began to beat out a rhythmreached over to grab the axe handle.SQUEAK!'Shut up!'Whaaauum.Imp stood like a discus thrower as the chord filled across the noisy room.It rang like an iron bar dropped on a library floor at midnight.Echoes bounced back from the corners of the room. Carrot shook the drops off his leather rain cape and exchanged salutes with the troll on guard. He strolled through the clerks in the outer rooms and knocked respectfully on the door of the Oblong Office.
'Come.'
Carrot entered,'A new dartboard, sir. It helps the men relax after their shift, sir.'
Vetinari recovered a little.
'Another one? But you had one only last year!'
'It's the Librarian, sir. Nobby lets him play and he just leans a bit and hammers the darts in with his fist. It ruins the board. Anyway, Detritus threw one through it. Through the wall behind it, too.'
'Very well. And?'
'Well . . . Acting-Constable Detritus needs to be let off havin marched to the desk, saluted and stood at ease.Lord Vetinari tensed, very slightly.'Oh, yes,' he said. 'Corporal Carrot. I was expecting . . . something like this. I'm sure you've come to ask me for . . . something?'Carrot unfolded a piece of grubby paper, and cleared his throat.'Well, sir . . . we could do with a new dartboard. You know. For when we're off duty?'The Patrician blinked. It was not often that he blinked.'I beg your pardon?'

Sergeant Colon saluted when Carrot came back, frowning in thought.
'We can go home now, sir?' he suggested.
'What? Why?'
'Now it's all sorted out?'
'I just said bearing down on him with its mouth open, although admittedly he'd had to change his underwear afterwards. But that had been simple. A great big fire-breathing dragon was straightforward. There it was, right in front of you, about to broil you alive. That was all you had to worry about. Admittedly, it was a lot to worry about, but it was . . . simple. It wasn't any kind of mystery.
'We're going to have to sort it out?' he said.
'Yes.'that to waylay suspicion,' said Carrot.'Ah. Very clever,' said the sergeant quickly. 'That's what I thought. He's saying that to waylay suspicion, I thought.''There's still a murderer out there somewhere. Or something worse.'Carrot ran his gaze over the ill-assorted soldiery.'But right now I think we're going to have to sort out this business with the Day Watch,' he said.'Er. People say it's practically a riot up there,' said Colon.'That's why we've got to sort it out.'Colon bit his lip. He was not, as such, a coward. Last year the city had been invaded by a dragon and he'd actually stood on a rooftop and fired arrows at it while it was
