If they had been accomplices," said Rouletabille, "they would not have been there at all. When people throw themselves into the arms of justice with the proofs of complicity on them, you can be sure they are not accomplices. I don't believe there are any accomplices in this affair."
"Then, why were they abroad at midnight? Why don't they say?"
"They have certainly some reason for their silence. What that reason is, has to be found out; for, even if they are not accomplices, it may be of importance. Everything that took place on such a night is important."
We had crossed an old bridge thrown over the Douve and were entering the part of the park called the Oak Grove, The oaks here were centuries old. Autumn had already shrivelled their tawny leaves, and their high branches, black and contorted, looked like horrid heads of hair, mingled with quaint reptiles such as the ancient sculptors have made on the head of Medusa. "I say, that fat's corking hot. What are you going to put in it?"
"Yorkshire pudding."
"Good old Yorkshire. Roast beef of old England, is that the menu for to-day?"
"Yes."
"The funeral baked meats, in fact. Smells good." He sniffed appreciatively. "Do you mind my gassing away?"
"If you came in to help I'd rather you helped." She drew another pan from the oven. "Here - turn all these potatoes over so that they brown on the other side…."
Bryan obeyed with alacrity.

"Have all these things been fizzling away in here while we've been at the inquest? Supposing they’d been all burnt up."
"Most improbable. there's a regulating number on the oven."
"Kind of electric brain, eh, what? Is that right?"
Lucy threw a swift look in his direction.
"Quite right. Now put the pan in the oven. Here, take the cloth. On the second shelf - I want the top one for the Yorkshire pudding."
Bryan obeyed, but not without uttering a shrill yelp

Miss Crackenthorpe hesitated a moment before saying: "My father is elderly and a little – difficult sometimes. He is very keen on economy, and he says things sometimes that upset people. I wouldn't like –"
Lucy broke in quickly:
"I'm quite used to elderly people, of all kinds, she said. I always manage to get on well with them."
Emma Crackenthorpe looked relieved.
"Trouble with father!" diagnosed Lucy. "I bet he's an old tartar."

She was apportioned a large gloomy bedroom which a small electric heater did its inadequate best to warm, and was shown round the house, a vast uncomfortable mansion. As they passed a door in the hall a voice roared out:
"That you, Emma? Got the new girl there? Bring her in. I want to look at her."
Emma flushed, glanced at Lucy apologetically.
The two women entered the room. It was richly upholstered in dark velvet, the narrow windows let in very little light, and it was full of heavy mahogany Victorian furniture.Mary Cassatt painting

At this moment there was a solid mass of people standing staring at oneparticular house or shop and it took little perspicuity to guess which thatwas. What we saw was a mass of average human beings looking with intenseinterest at the spot where another human being had been done to death. As we drew nearer this proved to be indeed the case. In front of a small dingy-looking shop with its shutters now closedstood a harassed-looking young policeman who was stolidly adjuring the crowdto "pass along there."

Such was he from the cradle; such was he ten years past, when I last saw him-a ripe rascal at nineteen

John Canty delivered himself of a furious curse and commanded a retreat; but it was too late. He and his tribe were swallowed up in that swarming hive of humanity, and hopelessly separated from each other in an instant. We are not considering that the prince was one of his tribe; Canty still kept his grip upon him. The prince's heart was beating high with hopes of escape now. A burly waterman, considerably exalted with liquor, found himself rudely shoved by Canty in his efforts to plow through the crowd; he laid his great hand on Canty's shoulder and said

"Nay, whither so fast, friend? Dost canker thy soul with sordid business when all that be leal men and true make holiday?"
"Mine affairs are mine own, they concern thee not," answered Canty, roughly; "take away thy hand and let me pass."
"Sith that is thy humor, thou'lt not pass till thou'st drunk to the Prince of Wales, I tell thee that," said the waterman, barring the way resolutely.

"Why, Joe, you never told us about that place before," said Bunting excitedly. "D'you really mean that there's a museum where they keeps all sorts of things connected with crimes? Things like knives murders have been committed with?"
"Knives?" cried Joe, pleased at having become the centre of attention, for Daisy had also fixed her blue eyes on him, and even Mrs. Bunting looked at him expectantly. "Much more than knives, Mr. Bunting! Why, they've got there, in little bottles, the real poison what people have been done away with."

"And can you go there whenever you like?" asked Daisy wonderingly. She had not realised before what extraordinary and agreeable privileges are attached to the position of a detective member of the London Police Force.
"Well, I suppose I could - " Joe smiled. "Anyway I can certainly get leave to take a friend there." He looked meaningly at Daisy, and Daisy looked eagerly at him.

"Yes," repeated his wife, in a low, strange tone of voice. "Yes, we're all right now, and as you say, Bunting, it's all along of Mr. Sleuth."
She walked across to a chair and sat down on it. "I'm just a little tottery still," she muttered.

"No!" replied Monsieur Darzac. "There is not. I took mine, four days ago, to Paris, the last time I came to the chateau before the crime."
"That's a pity!" replied Fred, very coldly. Then, turning to Rouletabille, he said: "If we go on at this rate, we'll both come to the same conclusion. Have you any idea, as to how the murderer got away from The Yellow Room?"

Yes," said my young friend; "I have an idea."
"So have I," said Fred, "and it must be the same as yours. There are no two ways of reasoning in this affair. I am waiting for the arrival of my chief before offering any explanation to the examining magistrate."

The building had a huge entry, and was altogether of colossal dimensions. I was naturally most occupied with the growing crowd of little people, and with the big open portals that yawned before me shadowy and mysterious. My general impression of the world I saw over their heads was a tangled waste of beautiful bushes and flowers, a long neglected and yet weedless garden. I saw a number of tall spikes of strange white flowers, measuring a foot perhaps across the spread of the waxen petals. They grew scattered, as if wild, among the variegated shrubs, but, as I say, I did not examine them closely at this time. The Time Machine was left deserted on the turf among the rhododendrons
Mary Cassatt painting
The arch of the doorway was richly carved, but naturally I did not observe the carving very narrowly, though I fancied I saw suggestions of old Phoenician decorations as I passed through, and it struck me that they were very badly broken and weather-worn. Several more brightly clad people met me in the doorway, and so we entered, I, dressed in dingy nineteenth-century garments, looking grotesque enough, garlanded with flowers, and surrounded by an eddying mass of bright, soft-colored robes and shining white limbs, in a melodious whirl of laughter and laughing speech.
