'Johansen,' Wolf Larsen said briskly to the new mate, 'keep all hands on deck now they're here. Get in the topsails and outer jibs. We're in for a sou'easter. Reef the jib and the mainsail, too, while you're about it.' ¡¡¡¡In a moment the decks were in commotion, Johansen bellowing orders and the men pulling or letting go ropes of various sorts- all naturally confusing to a landsman such as myself. But it was the heartlessness of it that especially struck me. The dead man

was an episode that was past, an incident that was dropped, in a canvas covering with a sack of coal, while the ship sped along and her work went on. Nobody had been affected. The hunters were laughing at a fresh story of Smoke's; the men pulling and hauling, and two of them climbing aloft; Wolf Larsen was studying the clouding sky to windward; and the dead man, buried sordidly, and sinking down, down- ¡¡¡¡Then it was that the cruelty of the sea, its relentlessness and awfulness, rushed upon me. Life had become cheap and tawdry, a beastly and inarticulate thing, a soulless stirring of the

If I were a girl coming to meet my young man, I'd not stand for being taken to a freezing cold barn miles from anywhere," Cedric objected. "I'd stand out for a nice bit of cuddle in the cinema, wouldn't you, Miss Eyelesbarrow?"
"Do we need to go into all this?" Harold demanded plaintively.
And with the voicing of the question the car drew up before the front door of Rutherford Hall and they all got out.

On entering the library Mr. Wimborne blinked a little as his shrewd old eyes went past Inspector Bacon whom he had already met, to the fair-haired, good-looking man beyond him
Inspector Bacon performed introductions.
"This is Detective-Inspector Craddock of New Scotland Yard," he said.
"New Scotland Yard - hm." Mr. Wimborne's eyebrows rose.
Dermot Craddock, who had a pleasant manner, went easily into speech.Gustav Klimt Painting

For a moment the suspicion crossed Lucy's mind that Miss Marple was mentally unhinged, but she rejected the idea. Miss Marple was eminently sane. She meant exactly what she had said.
"What kind of a body?" asked Lucy Eyelesbarrow with admirable composure.
"A woman's body," said Miss Marple. "The body of a woman who was murdered - strangled actually – in a train."
Lucy's eyebrows rose slightly.
"Well, that's certainly unusual. Tell me about it."

Elspeth Mrs. McGillicuddy doesn't imagine things," said Miss Marple. "That's why I'm relying on what she said. If it had been Dorothy Cartwright, now – it would have been quite a different matter. Dorothy always has a good story, and quite often believes it herself, and there is usually a kind of basis of truth but certainly no more. But Elspeth is kind of woman who finds it very hard to make herself believe that anything at all extraordinary or out of the way could happen. She's most unsuggestible, rather like granite."

Surely-surely this could not be a second coincidence? The sordid crime took on a new aspect. Who was the mysterious individual who had killed Mrs Ascher and left anA B C railway guide behind him? When we left the police station our first visit was to the mortuary tosee the body of the dead woman.A strange feeling came over me as I gazeddown on that wrinkled old face with the scanty grey hair drawn back tightlyfrom the temples. It looked so peaceful,so incredibly remote from violence. "Never know who or what struck her,"observed the sergeant."That's whatDr Kerr says.I'm glad it was that way, poor old soul.A decent woman shewas."

." "She must have been beautiful once,"said Poirot. "Really?"I murmured incredulously. "But yes, look at the line of the jaw,the bones, the moulding of thehead." Our next move was a brief interview with the police surgeon. Dr Kerr was a competent-looking middle-aged man.He spoke briskly andwith decision. "The weapon wasn't found,"he said. "Impossible to say what it may have been.A weighted stick,a club, aform of sandbag-any of those would fit the case." "Would much force be needed to strike such a blow?"

"Willingly!" exclaimed Dorothy; "indeed, it is of no use to me now, and when you have it you can command the Winged Monkeys three times."
"And I think I shall need their service just those three times," answered Glinda, smiling.
Dorothy then gave her the Golden Cap, and the Witch said to the Scarecrow, "What will you do when Dorothy has left us?"

"I will return to the Emerald City," he replied, "for Oz has made me its ruler and the people like me. The only thing that worries me is how to cross the hill of the Hammer-Heads."
"By means of the Golden Cap I shall command the Winged Monkeys to carry you to the gates of the Emerald City," said Glinda, "for it would be a shame to deprive the people of so wonderful a ruler."
"Am I really wonderful?" asked the Scarecrow.
"You are unusual," replied Glinda.

"I took this lad under my protection when a mob such as thou would have mishandled him, mayhap killed him; dost imagine I will desert him now to a worser fate?-for whether thou art his father or no-and sooth to say, I think it is a lie-a decent swift death were better for such a lad than life in such brute hands as thine. So go thy ways, and set quick about it, for I like not much bandying of words, being not overpatient in my nature."
Gustav Klimt Painting
John Canty moved off, muttering threats and curses, and was swallowed from sight in the crowd. Hendon ascended three flights of stairs to his room, with his charge, after ordering a meal to be sent thither. It was a poor apartment, with a shabby bed and some odds and ends of old furniture in it, and was vaguely lighted by a couple of sickly candles. The little king dragged himself to the bed and lay down upon it, almost exhausted with hunger and fatigue

As she lay thinking and mourning, the suggestion began to creep into her mind that there was an undefinable something about this boy that was lacking in Tom Canty, mad or sane. She could not describe it, she could not tell just what it was, and yet her sharp mother-instinct seemed to detect it and perceive it. What if the boy were really not her son, after all? Oh, absurd! She almost smiled at the idea, spite of her griefs and troubles. No matter, she found that it was an idea that would not "down

A man, of age approximately 28, slight in figure, height approximately 5 ft. '8 in. Complexion dark. No beard or whiskers. Wearing a black diagonal coat hard felt hat, high white collar, and tie. Carried a newspaper parcel. Very respectable appearance."
Mrs. Bunting walked forward. She gave a long, fluttering sigh of unutterable relief.

"There's the chap!" said Joe Chandler triumphantly. "And now, Miss Daisy" - he turned to her jokingly, but there was a funny little tremor in his frank, cheerful-sounding voice - "if you knows of any nice, likely young fellow that answers to that description - well, you've only got to walk in and earn your reward of five hundred pounds."
"Five hundred pounds!" cried Daisy and her father simultaneously.

Mrs. Bunting looked across at him. She would have given a very great deal to be able to lie, to pretend that she did not know what those dreadful cries had portended. But when it came to the point she found she could not do so.

"Yes," she said dully. "I heard a word here and there. There's been another murder, hasn't there?"
"Two other murders," he said soberly.
"Two? That's worse news!" She turned so pale - a sallow greenish-white - that Bunting thought she was again going queer.

What do you mean by that?" asked Monsieur Darzac, who had followed us and listened with almost breathless attention to all that Rouletabille had said.

"No, monsieur, I don't know who the murderer is; but don't be afraid, Monsieur Robert Darzac - I shall know."

My sensations would be hard to describe. As the columns of hail grew thinner, I saw the white figure more distinctly. It was very large, for a silver birch-tree touched its shoulder. It was of white marble, in shape something like a winged sphinx, but the wings, instead of being carried vertically at the sides, were spread so that it seemed to hover. The pedestal, it appeared to me, was of bronze, and was thick with verdigris. It chanced that the face was towards me
Gustav Klimt Painting
the sightless eyes seemed to watch me; there was the faint shadow of a smile on the lips. It was greatly weather-worn, and that imparted an unpleasant suggestion of disease. I stood looking at it for a little space--half a minute, perhaps, or half an hour. It seemed to advance and to recede as the hail drove before it denser or thinner. At last I tore my eyes from it for a moment and saw that the hail curtain had worn threadbare, and that the sky was lightening with the promise of the Sun.

Gustav Klimt Painting

Gustav Klimt Painting
