Gustav Klimt The Kiss

Gustav Klimt The Kiss
Not at all. It was advisable that someone should be at the inquest to watch the proceedings on behalf of the family. I have arranged for an interview with the inspector at the house. I have no doubt that, distressing as all this has been, the situation will soon be clarified. In my own mind, there seems little doubt as to what occurred. As Emma has told us, the key of the Long Barn was known locally to hang outside the door. It seems highly probable that the place was used in the winter months as a place of assignation by local couples. No doubt there was a quarrel and some young man lost control of himself. Horrified at what he had done, his eye lit on the sarcophagus and he realised that it would make an excellent place of concealment."

Lucy thought to herself, “Yes, it sounds most plausible. That's just what one might think."
Cedric said, "You say a local couple - but nobody's been able to identify the girl locally."
"It's early days yet. No doubt we shall get an identification before long. And it is possible, of course, that the man in question was a local resident, but that the girl came from elsewhere, perhaps from some other part of Brackhampton. Brackhampton's a big place - it's grown enormously in the last twenty years."

Miss Marple departed, and Lucy, after a moment's reflection, rang up a Registry Office in Brackhampton, the manageress of which she knew very well. She explained her desire for a post in the neighbourhood so as to be near her "aunt." After turning down, with a little difficulty and a good deal of ingenuity, several more desirable places, Rutherford Hall was mentioned.
"That sounds exactly what I want," said Lucy firmly.
The Registry Office rang up Miss Crackenthorpe, Miss Crackenthorpe rang up Lucy.
Two days later Lucy left London en route for Rutherford Hall.

Driving her own small car, Lucy Eyelesbarrow drove through an imposing pair of vast iron gates. Just inside them was what had originally been a small lodge which now seemed completely derelict, whether through war damage, or merely through neglect, it was difficult to be sure. A long winding drive led through large gloomy clumps of rhododendrons up to the house. Lucy caught her breath in a slight gasp when she saw the house which was a kind of miniature Windsor Castle. The stone steps in front of the door could have done with attention and the gravel sweep was green with neglected weeds.

Did she sell that type of thing?" The inspector shook his head. "She sold penny time-tables.This was a big one-kind of thing onlySmith's or a big stationer would keep." A light came into Poirto's eyes.He leant forward. A light came into the inspector's eye also. "A railway guide, you say.A Bradshaw-or an A B C?" "By the lord,"he said."It was an A B C."
Gustav Klimt The Kiss
I think that I can date my interest in the case from that first mentionof the A B C railway guide.Up till then I had not been able to raise muchenthusiasm. This sordid murder of an old woman in a back-street shop was solike the usual type of crime reported in the newspapers that it failed tostrike a significant note.In my own mind I had put down the anonymous letterwith its mention of the 21st as a mere coincidence.Mrs Ascher,I feltreasonably sure, had been the victim of her drunken brute of a husband. But now the mention of the railway guide (so familiarly known by itsalphabetical order)sent a quiver of excitement through me.

Gustav Klimt The Kiss

Gustav Klimt The Kiss She was both beautiful and young to their eyes. Her hair was a rich red in color and fell in flowing ringlets over her shoulders. Her dress was pure white but her eyes were blue, and they looked kindly upon the little girl.
"What can I do for you, my child?" she asked.
Dorothy told the Witch all her story: how the cyclone had brought her to the Land of Oz, how she had found her companions, and of the wonderful adventures they had met with.
Gustav Klimt The Kiss
My greatest wish now," she added, "is to get back to Kansas, for Aunt Em will surely think something dreadful has happened to me, and that will make her put on mourning; and unless the crops are better this year than they were last, I am sure Uncle Henry cannot afford it."
Glinda leaned forward and kissed the sweet, upturned face of the loving little girl.
"Bless your dear heart," she said, "I am sure I can tell you of a way to get back to Kansas." Then she added, "But, if I do, you must give me the Golden Cap."

Not too fast, friend. Thou art needlessly rough, methinks. What is the lad to thee?"
"If it be any business of thine to make and meddle in others" affairs, he is my son."
"'Tis a lie!" cried the little king, hotly.
"Boldly said, and I believe thee, whether thy small head-piece be sound or cracked, my boy. But whether this scurvy ruffian be thy father or no, "tis all one, he shall not have thee to beat thee and abuse, according to his threat, so thou prefer to abide with me

"I do, I do-I know him not, I loathe him, and will die before I will go with him."
"Then "tis settled, and there is naught more to say."
"We will see, as to that!" exclaimed John Canty, striding past Hendon to get at the boy; "by force shall he-"
"If thou do but touch him, thou animated offal, I will spit thee like a goose!" said Hendon, barring the way and laying his hand upon his sword-hilt. Canty drew back. "Now mark ye," continued HendonGustav Klimt The Kiss

The light was put out, and the family retired. As soon as the snorings of the head of the house and his mother showed that they were asleep, the young girls crept to where the prince lay, and covered him tenderly from the cold with straw and rags; and their mother crept to him also, and stroked his hair, and cried over him, whispering broken words of comfort and compassion in his ear the while
Gustav Klimt The Kiss

She had saved a morsel for him to eat also; but the boy's pains had swept away all appetite-at least for black and tasteless crusts. He was touched by her brave and costly defense of him, and by her commiseration; and he thanked her in very noble and princely words, and begged her to go to sleep and try to forget her sorrows. And he added that the king his father would not let her loyal kindness and devotion go unrewarded. This return to his "madness" broke her heart anew, and she strained him to her breast again and again and then went back, drowned in tears, to her bed.

"No fear of such good news as that yet awhile. If they'd caught him," said Joe ruefully, "well, I don't suppose I should be here, Mr. Bunting. But the Yard are circulating a description at last. And - well, they've found his weapon!"
"No?" cried Bunting excitedly. "You don't say so! Whatever sort of a thing is it? And are they sure 'tis his?"
"Well, 'tain't sure, but it seems to be likely."
Gustav Klimt The Kiss
Mrs. Bunting had slipped into the room and shut the door behind her. But she was still standing with her back against the door, looking at the group in front of her. None of them were thinking of her - she thanked God for that! She could hear everything that was said without joining in the talk and excitement.
"Listen to this!" cried Joe Chandler exultantly. "'Tain't given out yet - not for the public, that is - but we was all given it by eight o'clock this morning. Quick work that eh?" He read out:

Gustav Klimt The Kiss Again she glanced at him quickly, furtively, but he seemed just as usual - he evidently meant just what he said and no more.
"I thought they was shouting something in the street - I mean just before I was took bad."
It was now Bunting's turn to stare at his wife quickly and rather furtively.
Gustav Klimt The Kiss
He had felt sure that her sudden attack of queerness, of hysterics - call it what you might - had been due to the shouting outside. She was not the only woman in London who had got the Avenger murders on her nerves. His morning paper said quite a lot of women were afraid to go out alone. Was it possible that the curious way she had been taken just now had had nothing to do with the shouts and excitement outside?

Besides," he added, "at five o'clock Monsieur Stangerson went into the room to fetch his daughter's hat"
"There is that also," said Rouletabille.
"That the man entered by the window at the time you say, I admit," I said; "but why did he shut the window? It was an act which would necessarily draw the attention of those who had left it open"
Gustav Klimt The Kiss
"It may be the window was not shut at once," replied the young reporter. "But if he did shut the window, it was because of the bend in the gravel path, a dozen yards from the pavilion, and on account of the three oaks that are growing at that spot."

lawn in a garden, surrounded by rhododendron bushes, and I noticed that their mauve and purple blossoms were dropping in a shower under the beating of the hail-stones. The rebounding, dancing hail hung in a cloud over the machine, and drove along the ground like smoke. In a moment I was wet to the skin. "Fine hospitality," said I, "to a man who has travelled innumerable years to see you."
Gustav Klimt The Kiss
Presently I thought what a fool I was to get wet. I stood up and looked round me. A colossal figure, carved apparently in some white stone, loomed indistinctly beyond the rhododendrons through the hazy downpour. But all else of the world was invisible.

Gustav Klimt The Kiss

Gustav Klimt The Kiss
