¡¡¡¡In the cold grey dawn the sisters lit their lamp, and read their chapter with an earnestness never felt before; for now the shadow of a real trouble had come, the little books were full of help and comfort; and, as they dressed, they agreed to say good-bye cheerfully and hopefully, and send their mother on her anxious journey unsaddened by tears or complaints from them. Everything seemed very strange when they went down - so dim and still outside, so full of light and b

ustle within. Breakfast at that early hour seemed odd, and even Hannah's familiar face looked unnatural as she flew about her kitchen with her night-cap on. The big trunk stood ready in the hall, Mother's cloak and bonnet lay on the sofa, and Mother herself sat trying to eat, but looking so pale and worn, with sleeplessness and anxiety, that the girls found it very hard to keep their resolution. Meg's eyes kept filling in spite of herself; Jo was obliged to hide her face in the kitchen roller more than once; and the little girls wore a grave, troubled expression, as if sorrow was a new experience to them.

"We keep to ourselves,"said Mrs Boynton. She began to wind up her ball ofwool."By the way,Raymond, who was that young woman who spoke to you just now?" Raymond started nervously. He flushed, then went white. "I -I don't know her name. She -she was on the train the other night." Mrs Boynton began slowly to try to heave herself out of her chair. "I don't think we"ll have much to do with her,"she said. Nadine rose and assisted the old woman to struggle out of her chair. She didit with a professional deftness that attracted Gerard's attention. .Good night,Mrs Lennox." They went off -a little procession. It did not seem to occur to any of theyounger members of the party to stay behind. Mr Cope was left looking after them. The expression on his face was an oddone. As Dr Gerard knew by experience,Americans are disposed to be a friendlyrace. They have not the uneasy suspicion of the travelling Briton. To a man of DrGerard's tact making the acquaintance of Mr Cope presented few difficulties.TheAmerican was lonely and was, like most of his race, disposed to friendliness.DrGerard's card-case was again to the fore. Reading the name on it,Mr Jefferson cope was duly impressed. "Why,surely,Dr Gerard, you were over in the States not very long ago?" "Last autumn.I was lecturing at Harvard."

He relapsed into silence again.
"You think something has happened to him, don't you?" asked Miss Marple.
"It's over a week now,"said Father. "He didn't have a stroke and fall down in the street. He'snot in a hospital as a result of an accident. So where is he? His disappearance has beenreported in the Press, but nobody's come forward with anyinformation yet."
"They may not have seen it. I didn't."

"It looks – it reallylooks" – Father was following out his own line of thought –"as though he meant to disappear. Leaving this place like that in themiddle of the night. You're quite sure about it, aren't you?" he demanded sharply. "You didn't dream it?"
"I am absolutely sure," said Miss Marple with finality.
Father heaved himself to his feet.
"I'd better go and seethat chambermaid," he said.
Father found Rose Sheldon on duty and ran anapproving eye over her pleasant person.

"Oh, I did see him later," said Miss Marple, "I meant I didn't see him actually come into the hotel."
  "You saw him later? When?"
  Miss Marple thought.
"Let me see. It was about 3 a.m. I couldn't sleep very well. Something woke me. Some sound. There are so many queernoises in London. I looked at my little clock, it was ten minutes past three. For somereason – I'm not quite sure what –I felt uneasy. Footsteps, perhaps, outside my door. Living in thecountry, if one hears footsteps in the middle of the night it makes one nervous. So I justopened my door and looked out. There was Canon Pennyfather leaving his room – it's next door to mine – and going off down the stairs wearing his overcoat."
"He came out of his room wearing his overcoat andwent down the stairs at 3 a.m. in the morning?"

"Yes," said MissMarple and added: "I thought it odd at the time."
Father looked at her for some moments.
"Miss Marple," hesaid, "why haven't you told anyonethis before?"
"Nobody asked me," saidMiss Marple simply.

inclined my head in acquiescence. ¡¡¡¡'I should not allow,' said Mr. Spenlow, with an evident increase of pious sentiment, and slowly shaking his head as he poised himself upon his toes and heels alternately, 'my suitable provision for my child to be influenced by a piece of youthful folly like the present. It is mere folly. Mere nonsense. In a little while, it will weigh lighter than any feather. But I might - I might - if this silly business were not completely relinquished altogether, be induced in some anxious moment to guard her from, and surround her with protections against, the consequences of any foolish step in the way of marriage.

Now, Mr. Copperfield, I hope that you will not render it necessary for me to open, even for a quarter of an hour, that closed page in the book of life, and unsettle, even for a quarter of an hour, grave affairs long since composed.' ¡¡¡¡There was a serenity, a tranquillity, a calm sunset air about him, which quite affected me. He was so peaceful and resigned - clearly had his affairs in such perfect train, and so systematically wound up - that he was a man to feel touched in the contemplation of. I really think I saw tears rise to his eyes, from the depth of his own feeling of all this.

had been down on business several times in the course of his career, and had on each occasion penetrated to the breakfast-parlour. He described it as an apartment of the most sumptuous nature, and said that he had drunk brown East India sherry there, of a quality so precious as to make a man wink. We had an adjourned cause in the Consistory that day - about excommunicating a baker who had been objecting in a vestry to a paving-rate - and as the evidence was just twice the length of Robinson Crusoe, according to a calculation I made, it was rather late in the day before we finished. ated for six weeks, and sentenced in no end of costs; and then the baker's proctor, and the judge, and the advocates on both sides (who were all nearly related), went out of town together, and Mr. Spenlow and I drove away in the phaeton. ¡¡¡¡The phaeton was a very handsome affair; the horses arched their necks and lifted up their legs as if they knew they belonged to Doctors' Commons. There was a good deal of competition in the Commons on all points of display, and it turned out some very choice equipages then; though I always have considered, and always shall consider, that in my time the great article of competition there was starch: which I think was worn among the proctors to as great an extent as it is in the nature of man to bear.

will give you the desired result. I say I do a little in that way myself. One Dowager, SHE calls it lip-salve. Another, SHE calls it gloves. Another, SHE calls it tucker-edging. Another, SHE calls it a fan. I call it whatever THEY call it. I supply it for 'em, but we keep up the trick so, to one another, and make believe with such a face, that they'd as soon think of laying it on, before a whole drawing-room, as before me. and no mistake - "How am I looking, Mowcher? Am I pale?" Ha! ha! ha! ha! Isn't THAT refreshing, my young friend!' ¡¡¡¡I never did in my days behold anything like Mowcher as she stood upon the dining table, intensely enjoying this refreshment, rubbing busily at Steerforth's head, and winking at me over it. ¡¡¡¡'Ah!' she said. 'Such things are not much in demand hereabouts. That sets me off again! I haven't seen a pretty woman since I've been here, jemmy.' ¡¡¡¡'No?' said Steerforth. ¡¡¡¡'Not the ghost of one,' replied Miss Mowcher. ¡¡¡¡'We could show her the substance of one, I think?' said Steerforth, addressing his eyes to mine. 'Eh, Daisy?' ¡¡¡¡'Yes, indeed,' said I.

¡¡¡¡When the pony-chaise stopped at the door, and my eyes were intent upon the house, I saw a cadaverous face appear at a small window on the ground floor (in a little round tower that formed one side of the house), and quickly disappear. The low arched door then opened, and the face came out. It was quite as cadaverous as it had looked in the window, though in the grain of it there was that tinge of red which is sometimes to be observed in the skins of red-haired people. It belonged to a red-haired person

- a youth of fifteen, as I take it now, but looking much older - whose hair was cropped as close as the closest stubble; who had hardly any eyebrows, and no eyelashes, and eyes of a red-brown, so unsheltered and unshaded, that I remember wondering how he went to sleep. He was high-shouldered and bony; dressed in decent black, with a white wisp of a neckcloth; buttoned up to the throat; and had a long, lank, skeleton hand, which particularly attracted my attention, as he stood at the pony's head, rubbing his chin with it, and looking up at us in the chaise. ¡¡¡¡'Is Mr. Wickfield at home, Uriah Heep?' said my aunt. ¡¡¡¡'Mr. Wickfield's at home, ma'am,' said Uriah Heep, 'if you'll please to walk in there' - pointing with his long hand to the room he meant.

¡¡¡¡ "What--aren't we going to be friends, then, any longer, as we used to be?" ¡¡¡¡ "No." ¡¡¡¡ "I didn't know that. I thought you were always going to be kind to me!" ¡¡¡¡ "No, I am not." ¡¡¡¡ "What have I done, then? I am sure I thought we two---- " The TREMOLO in her voice caused her to break off. ¡¡¡¡ "Sue, I sometimes think you are a flirt," said he abruptly. ¡¡¡¡ There was a momentary pause, till she suddenly jumped up; and to his surprise he saw by the kettle-flame that her face was flushed. ¡¡¡¡ "I can't talk to you any longer, Jude!" she said, the tragic contralto note having come back as of old. "It is getting too dark to stay together like this, after playing morbid Good Friday tunes that make one feel what one shouldn't! ... We mustn't sit and talk in this way any more. Yoil painting
es--you must go away, for you mistake me! I am very much the reverse of what you say so cruelly--Oh, Jude, it WAS cruel to say that! Yet I can't tell you the truth--I should shock you by letting you know how I give way to my impulses, and how much I feel that I shouldn't have been provided with attractiveness unless it were meant to be exercised! Some women's love of being loved is insatiable; and so, often, is their love of loving; and in the last case they may find that they can't give it continuously to the chamber-officer appointed by the bishop's licence to receive it. But you are so straightforward, Jude, that you can't understand me! ... Now you must go. I am sorry my husband is not at home." ¡¡¡¡ "Are you?" ¡¡¡¡ "I perceive I have said that in mere convention! Honestly I don't think I am sorry. It does not matter, either way, sad to say!"
