That was suspicious evidently," acquiesced Rouletabille. "And were they dressed?"
"That is what is so incredible - they were dressed - completely - not one part of their costume wanting. The woman wore sabots, but the man had on laced boots. Now they assert that they went to bed at half-past nine. On arriving this morning, the examining magistrate brought with him from Paris a revolver of the same calibre as that found in the room (for he couldn't use the one held for evidence), and made his Registrar fire two shots in The Yellow Room while the doors and windows were closed. We were with him in the lodge of the concierges, and yet we heard nothing, not a sound. The concierges have lied, of that there can be no doubt. They must have been already waiting, not far from the pavilion, waiting for something! Certainly they are not to be accused of being the authors of the crime, but their complicity is not improbable. That was why Monsieur de Marquet had them arrested at once."

I would have asked who wanted me: I would have demanded if Mrs.

the nursery, the breakfast, dining, and drawing-rooms were become
for me awful regions, on which it dismayed me to intrude.

Lucy had gone straight to the kitchen on getting back from the inquest, and was busy with preparations for lunch when Bryan Eastley put his head in.
"Can I give you a hand in any way?" he asked. "I'm handy about the house."
Lucy gave him a quick, slightly preoccupied glance. Bryan had arrived at the inquest direct in his small M.G. car, and she had not as yet had much time to size him up
Edward Hopper Painting
What she saw was likeable enough. Eastley was an amiable-looking young man of thirty-odd with brown hair, rather plaintive blue eyes and an enormous fair moustache.
"The boys aren't back yet," he said, coming in and sitting on the end of the kitchen table. "It will take 'em another twenty minutes on their bikes."
Lucy smiled.
"They were certainly determined not to miss anything."
"Can't blame them. I mean to say - first inquest in their young lives and right in the family so to speak."
"Do you mind getting off the table, Mr. Eastley? I want to put the baking dish down there."

Oh, there are any amount of old stables. there's no trouble about that. She frowned a moment, then said, Eyelesbarrow – rather an unusual name. Some friends of mine were telling me about a Lucy Eyelesbarrow - the Kennedys?"
"Yes. I was with them in North Devon when Mrs. Kennedy was having a baby."
Emma Crackenthorpe smiled.
"I know they said they'd never had such a wonderful time as when you were there seeing to everything. But I had the idea that you were terribly expensive. The sum I mentioned –

That's quite all right," said Lucy. "I want particularly, you see, to be near Brackhampton. I have an elderly aunt in a critical state of health and I want to be within easy distance of her. That's why the salary is a secondary consideration. I can't afford to do nothing. If I could be sure of having some time off most days?"
"Oh, of course. Every afternoon, till six, if you like?"
"That seems perfect."

The street in which the tragedy had occurred was a turning off the mainstreet.Mrs Ascher's shop was situated about half-way down it on theright-hand side. As we turned into the street Poirot glanced at his watch and I realizedwhy he had delayed his visit to the scene of the crime until now.It was juston half-past five.He had wished to reproduced yesterday's atmosphere asclosely as possible.
Edward Hopper Painting
But if that had been his purpose it was defeated. Certainly at this moment the road bore very little likeness to itsappearance on the previous evening. There were a certain number of smallshops interspersed between private houses of the poorer class.I judged thatordinarily there would be a fair number of people passing up and down-mostlypeople of the poorer classes, with a good sprinkling of children playing onthe pavements and in the road.

And pleased with this jest, he removed the chair from the table, took his stand behind the king, and proceeded to wait upon him in the courtliest way he was capable of.
When the king ate, the rigor of his royal dignity relaxed a little, and with his growing contentment came a desire to talk. He said:
"I think thou callest thyself Miles Hendon, if I heard thee aright?"
Edward Hopper Painting
Yes, sire," Miles replied then observed to himself, "If I must humor the poor lad's madness, I must sire him, I must majesty him, I must not go by halves, I must stick at nothing that belongeth to the part I play, else shall I play it ill and work evil to this charitable and kindly cause." "If it so chance that we be separated, let each make for London Bridge; whoso findeth himself as far as the last linen-draper's shop on the bridge, let him tarry there till the others be come, then will we flee into Southwark together."
At this moment the party burst suddenly out of darkness into light; and not only into light, but into the midst of a multitude of singing, dancing, and shouting people, massed together on the river-frontage.
Edward Hopper Painting
There was a line of bonfires stretching as far as one could see, up and down the Thames; London Bridge was illuminated; Southwark Bridge likewise; the entire river was aglow with the flash and sheen of colored lights, and constant explosions of fireworks filled the skies with an intricate commingling of shooting splendors and a thick rain of dazzling sparks that almost turned night into day; everywhere were crowds of revelers; all London seemed to be at large.

"If they catches him, and if you comes along with me to see our Black Museum at the Yard, you'll certainly see the knife, Miss Daisy. They keeps all them kind of things there. So if, as I say, this weapon should lead to the conviction of The Avenger - well, then, that knife 'ull be there, and you'll see' it!"
"The Black Museum? Why, whatever do they have a museum in your place for?" asked Daisy wonderingly. "I thought there was only the British Museum
Edward Hopper Painting
And then even Mrs. Bunting, as well as Bunting and Chandler, laughed aloud.
"You are a goosey girl!" said her father fondly. "Why, there's a lot of museums in London; the town's thick with 'em. Ask Ellen there. She and me used to go to them kind of places when we was courting - if the weather was bad."
"But our museum's the one that would interest Miss Daisy," broke in Chandler eagerly. "It's a regular Chamber of 'Orrors!"

Putting out a languid hand, she pulled herself up, with the help of the table, on to her feet. "Go down again to the kitchen, child"; but there was a sob, a kind of tremor in her voice.
"You haven't been eating properly, Ellen - that's what's the matter with you," said Bunting suddenly. "Now I come to think of it, you haven't eat half enough these last two days. I always did say - in old days many a time I telled you - that a woman couldn't live on air. But there, you never believed me!"
Edward Hopper Painting
Daisy stood looking from one to the other, a shadow over her bright, pretty face. "I'd no idea you'd had such a bad time, father," she said feelingly. "Why didn't you let me know about it? I might have got something out of Old Aunt." Edward Hopper Painting

holding his bicycle in his hand, for he could not venture to ride it on this rough path. That accounts for the lightness of the impression made by the wheels along it, in spite of the softness of the ground. If there had been a man on the bicycle, the wheels would have sunk deeply into the soil. No, no; there was but one man there, the murderer on foot."
Edward Hopper Painting
"Bravo! - bravo!" cried Fred again, and coming suddenly towards us and, planting himself in front of Monsieur Robert Darzac, he said to him:
"If we had a bicycle here, we might demonstrate the correctness of the young man's reasoning, Monsieur Robert Darzac. Do you know whether there is one at the chateau?"

I nodded, pointed to the sun, and gave them such a vivid rendering of a thunderclap as startled them. They all withdrew a pace or so and bowed. Then came one laughing towards me, carrying a chain of beautiful flowers altogether new to me, and put it about my neck. The idea was received with melodious applause; and presently they were all running to and fro for flowers, and laughingly flinging them upon me until I was almost smothered with blossom. You who have never seen the like

can scarcely imagine what delicate and wonderful flowers countless years of culture had created. Then someone suggested that their plaything should be exhibited in the nearest building, and so I was led past the sphinx of white marble, which had seemed to watch me all the while with a smile at my astonishment, towards a vast grey edifice of fretted stone. As I went with them the memory of my confident anticipations of a profoundly grave and intellectual posterity came, with irresistible merriment, to my mind.

Edward Hopper Painting

Edward Hopper Painting
Edward Hopper Painting

Edward Hopper Painting

Edward Hopper Painting

Edward Hopper Painting
