"We have been called in on the case, Mr. Wimborne," he said. "As you are representing the Crackenthorpe family, I feel it is only fair that we should give you a little confidential information."
Nobody could make a better show of presenting a very small portion of the truth and implying that it was the whole truth than Inspector Craddock.
"Inspector Bacon will agree, I am sure," he added, glancing at his colleague.
Inspector Bacon agreed with all due solemnity and not at all as though the whole matter were prearranged.
Bouguereau William
"It's like this," said Craddock. "We have reason to believe from information that has come into our possession, that the dead woman is not a native of these parts, that she travelled down here from London and that she had recently come from abroad. Probably (though we are not sure of that) from France."
Mr. Wimborne again raised his eyebrows.
"Indeed," he said. "Indeed?"
"That being the case," explained Inspector Bacon, "the Chief Constable felt that the Yard was better fitted to investigate the matter."

see," said Lucy thoughtfully, "Well, let's accept it all. Where do I come in?"
"I was very much impressed by you," said Miss Marple, "and you see, I haven't got the physical strength nowadays to get about and do things."
"You want me to make inquiries? That sort of thing? But won't the police have done all that? Or do you think they have been just slack?"
Bouguereau William
Oh, no," said Miss Marple. "They haven't been slack. It's just that I've got a theory about the woman's body. It's got to be somewhere. If it wasn't found in the train, then it must have been pushed or thrown out of the train - but it hasn't been discovered anywhere on the line. So I travelled down the same way to see if there was anywhere where the body could have been thrown off the train and yet wouldn't have been found on the line – and there was. The railway line makes a big curve before getting into Brackhampton, on the edge of a high embankment. If a body were thrown out there, when the train was leaning at an angle, I think it would pitch right down the embankment."

The doctor shot a keen glance at Poirot. "Meaning,I suppose, could a shaky old man of seventy do it?Oh,yes,it's perfectly possible-given sufficient weight in the head of the weapon, quite a feeble person could achieve the desired result." "Then the murderer could just as well be a woman as a man?" The suggestion took the doctor somewhat aback. "A woman,eh?Well,I confess it never occurred to me to connect a womanwith this type of crime. But of course it's possible-perfectly possible. Only, psychologically speaking,I shouldn't say this was a woman'scrime."
Bouguereau William
Perfectly, perfectly. On the face of it,highly improbable. But one musttake all possibilities into account. The body was lying-how?" The doctor gave us a careful description of the position of thevictim. It was his opinion that she had been standing with her back to thecounter (and therefore to her assailant)when the blow had been struck.Shehad slipped down in a heap behind the counter quite out of sight of anyoneentering the shop casually.

Turning to the Tin Woodman, she asked, "What will become of you when Dorothy leaves this country?"
He leaned on his axe and thought a moment. Then he said, "The Winkies were very kind to me, and wanted me to rule over them after the Wicked Witch died. I am fond of the Winkies, and if I could get back again to the Country of the West, I should like nothing better than to rule over them forever."

"My second command to the Winged Monkeys," said Glinda "will be that they carry you safely to the land of the Winkies. Your brain may not be so large to look at as those of the Scarecrow, but you are really brighter than he is -- when you are well polished -- and I am sure you will rule the Winkies wisely and well."
Then the Witch looked at the big, shaggy Lion and asked, Bouguereau William

He had been on his feet a good part of a day and a night, for it was now two or three o'clock in the morning, and had eaten nothing meantime. He murmured drowsily:
"Prithee, call me when the table is spread," and sunk into a deep sleep immediately.
A smile twinkled in Hendon's eye, and he said to himself

"By the mass, the little beggar takes to one's quarters and usurps one's bed with as natural and easy a grace as if he owned them-with never a by-your-leave or so-please-it-you, or anything of the sort. In his diseased ravings he called himself the Prince of Wales, and bravely doth he keep up the character. Poor little friendless rat, doubtless his mind has been disordered with ill usage. Well, I will be his friend; I have saved him, and it draweth me strongly to him

Ah, yes, this was plainly the right way out of the difficulty; therefore, she set her wits to work at once to contrive that test. But it was an easier thing to propose than to accomplish. She turned over in her mind one promising test after another, but was obliged to relinquish them all-none of them were absolutely sure, absolutely perfect; and an imperfect one could not satisfy her. Evidently she was racking her head in vain-it seemed

manifest that she must give the matter up. While this depressing thought was passing through her mind, her ear caught the regular breathing of the boy, and she knew he had fallen asleep. And while she listened, the measured breathing was broken by a soft, startled cry, such as one utters in a troubled dream. This chance occurrence furnished her instantly with a plan worth all her labored tests combined. She at once set herself feverishly, but noiselessly, to work to relight her candle, muttering to herself, "Had I but seen him then, I should have known!

Yes. That's what the Lord Mayor offered yesterday. Some private bloke - nothing official about it. But we of the Yard is barred from taking that reward, worse luck. And it's too bad, for we has all the trouble, after all"
"Just hand that bit of paper over, will you?" said Bunting. "I'd like to con it over to myself."
Chandler threw over the bit of flimsy.

A moment later Bunting looked up and handed it back. "Well, it's clear enough, isn't it?"
"Yes. And there's hundreds - nay, "thousands - of young fellows that might be a description of," said Chandler sarcastically. "As a pal of mine said this morning, 'There isn't a chap will like to carry a newspaper parcel after this.' And it won't do to have a respectable appearance - eh?"

"Ellen?" he said warningly, "Ellen, now do have a care! I can't think what's come over, you about these murders. Turn your mind away from them, do! We needn't talk about them - not so much, that is "
"But I wants to talk about them," cried Mrs. Bunting hysterically.
Bouguereau William
Bunting, staring across at his wife, felt sadly perplexed and disturbed. She really did seem ill; even her slight, spare figure looked shrunk. For the first time, so he told himself ruefully, Ellen was beginning to look her full age. Her slender hands - she had kept the pretty, soft white hands of the woman who has never done rough work - grasped the edge of the table with a convulsive movement.

I could not but observe that Monsieur Darzac was deeply moved; and I suspected that Rouletabille's confident assertion was not pleasing to him. Why, I asked myself, if he was really afraid that the murderer should be discovered, was he helping the reporter to find him? My young friend seemed to have received the same impression, for he said, bluntly:

Monsieur Darzac, don't you want me to find out who the murderer was?"
"Oh! - I should like to kill him with my own hand!" cried Mademoiselle Stangerson's fiance, with a vehemence that amazed me.
"I believe you," said Rouletabille gravely; "but you have not answered my question."

Bouguereau William
Bouguereau William looked up again at the crouching white shape, and the full temerity of my voyage came suddenly upon me. What might appear when that hazy curtain was altogether withdrawn? What might not have happened to men? What if cruelty had grown into a common passion? What if in this interval the race had lost its manliness and had developed into something inhuman, unsympathetic, and overwhelmingly powerful? I might seem some old-world savage animal, only the more dreadful and disgusting for our common likeness--a foul creature to be incontinently slain.

Already I saw other vast shapes--huge buildings with intricate parapets and tall columns, with a wooded hill-side dimly creeping in upon me through the lessening storm. I was seized with a panic fear. I turned frantically to the Time Machine, and strove hard to readjust it. As I did so the shafts of the sun smote through the thunderstorm. The grey downpour was swept aside and vanished like the trailing garments of a ghost. Above me, in the intense blue of the summer sky,

Bouguereau William

Bouguereau William

Bouguereau William
